why your shopify store is slow (and it's not your theme).

Nine times out of ten it's not the theme, it's the twelve apps stacked on top of it. Here's how to find the real culprits.

Every store owner thinks the same thing when the site feels slow: the theme is old, time for something new. That's almost never the actual cause.

it's the apps

Every app you install adds at least one script, often more. Reviews, upsells, tracking pixels, chat widgets: they all load on every page, even when you only needed them at checkout.

  • Open your devtools and count how many separate scripts load before the page is interactive
  • For each app, ask: what does this cost, what does it earn, does anyone still use it
  • Replace what you can with forty lines of theme code instead of a whole app

and it's the images

The second culprit: a 4 MB hero image sent unchanged to a phone. Correct sizing and lazy loading below the fold usually wins back more time than a brand new theme ever would.

A rescue always costs less than the rebuild you were quoted instead.

Before you consider a new theme, measure what's actually happening on your busiest pages, on a real device. The win is usually there within two weeks, without a single customer noticing a visual change.
