what is generative engine optimization (geo), and why does your store need it?

More purchases now start with a question to ChatGPT instead of a search on Google. GEO is how you make sure your store shows up in that answer.

Search engine optimization was about a spot in a list of blue links. Generative engine optimization is about something else: do you get mentioned in the one answer an ai model gives, or not? For a store, that difference is increasingly the difference between getting a visitor or not.

what does geo actually mean?

GEO is structuring your content so models like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews use your pages as a source when putting together an answer. That means: answering the customer’s question directly and factually, showing current numbers and dates, and building content so that a piece of it is already a complete answer on its own.

why can’t my store afford to ignore this?

More than 60 percent of search interactions now include an ai-generated component. Customers who used to compare ten results now get one summarized answer naming two or three brands. If you’re not among them, you simply don’t exist at that stage of the customer journey, no matter how good your product is.

does geo replace seo, or sit alongside it?

Alongside it, not instead of it. Traditional search engines aren’t going away and still drive traffic, but the share of ai-generated answers is growing. Stores that combine both tracks cover the customer who still clicks a link and the one who already gets their answer in a chat.

where to start

  • Answer each article’s core question in the first paragraph, not buried near the bottom
  • Use current figures and put a last-updated date on your content
  • Structure content with clear question headers, so a model can lift a single piece as an answer
  • Build authority with original data or your own real-world examples, not rewritten competitor content
  • Publish consistently: fragmented, stale content gets cited less often

frequently asked questions about generative engine optimization

can I measure geo the way I measure seo?

Not as precisely yet. Early tools are starting to track mentions in ai answers, but measurability is less mature than classic seo.

do I need to rewrite all my existing content?

Not all of it. Start with the pages that drive the most revenue or traffic, and restructure those first toward direct answers.

does structured data help with this?

Yes. FAQPage and Product schema make it easier for models to correctly interpret and cite your content.

is this only relevant for large brands?

No, smaller stores with clear, factual content often have an advantage: less noise, easier to cite.

how quickly will I see results?

Slower than some seo changes already do. Expect months, not weeks, before models consistently use your new content as a source.

You’re no longer just competing for a click. You’re competing to get mentioned.
